PUTRAJAYA - The 2017 Merdeka Day celebration on Aug 31 will see a re-enactment of the independence declaration.
Multimedia and Communication Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said the celebration's venue, Dataran Merdeka, would be designed to look like Stadium Merdeka, where the original declaration occurred.
“This year's celebration will be a different from previous years. Instead of the usual parade, the celebration will re-enact the Merdeka declaration in 1957.
“Dataran Merdeka will be designed like Stadium Merdeka, where we try to replicate the stadium atmosphere like it was in 1957.
“We want Malaysians today to understand how difficult it was to achieve independence back then. We want people to appreciate the hard work that others had to put in to ensure that our country is free.
“Many people today are too carried away with chasing advancements, but they forget the roots and foundation,” said Dr Salleh, at a press conference after chairing a meeting with the National Day 2017 organising committee.
The theme for this year's celebration is “Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa”.
Dr Salleh said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would be giving the Merdeka address at 4pm on Aug 30.
The Merdeka countdown celebration will be held at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, immediately after the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.
“Usually, the Prime Minister's address is done at night, but this year we've made several changes to coincide with the closing of the SEA Games,” the minister said.
Dr Salleh added that the official Malaysia Day celebration this year on Sept 16 would be held in Kota Kinabalu.
