Do not fear the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) as the Bumiputera agenda and the country’s sovereignty will be safeguarded, Umno President Najib Razak said.
Najib, who is also the Prime Minister, explained that since the beginning of the TPPA negotiations, Malaysia has insisted that the trade agreement was outlined based on the stipulated terms.
Speaking during the winding-up speech at the Umno General Assembly 2015, Najib urged the Bumiputera community to stand up to compete and capitalise on the inherent opportunities under the TPPA, while giving the assurance that the Bumiputera agenda will be safeguarded.
“If it (Bumiputera agenda) is not accepted, we will withdraw from the TPPA. I met United States (US) President (Barack) Obama twice, and Tokpa (International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed) had also met various parties,” he said at Merdeka Hall, Putra World Trade Centre here, Saturday.
Finally, added Najib, 11 TPPA countries including the US accepted that the Bumiputera agenda must be included as part of the TPPA terms.
