Three Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers are among 14 individuals collared by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with the issuance of Kopi-O licences (licences obtained illegally).

The graft buster’s special operation was launched on Jan 11 this year and is on-going. Those detained included nine members of the public who tried to acquire such licences and two middlemen.

The 14, aged between 19 and 50 years, were picked up from Limbang, Miri, Bintulu and Sibu, said state MACC director Dato Badrul Shah Norman in a press statement yesterday.

Badrul said initial investigations indicated that bribery took place to enable the individuals to obtain various classes of licences without the need to sit for driving tests.

Those involved were also discovered to have attempted to obtain licences by submitting falsified documents to apply for a change from Bruneian licences to Malaysian licences, he added.

He said the bribe money was between RM2,500 and RM2,800 per licence, depending on the class. The special operation is still on-going and more arrests are expected in the near future, said Badrul.

Those who have information on this matter are urged to contact the state MACC at 082-467701 or 082-467702. -BP
