EC Estimates 75% Turnout For Both Polls

KUALA KANGSAR - The Election Commission expects a 75% voter turnout in the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections on Saturday, a lower estimate compared to the 13th General Election.

Its chairman, Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah, said the expected lower turnout was due to voters who are unable to return to cast their ballots.

“The turnout was 88% in Sungai Besar during the last general election, but this time we expect about 75% in both areas.

“Voters living outside Perak may not want to return home maybe because they feel that this is only a small election," Mohd Hashim told reporters after observing final preparations at Dewan Jubli Perak, which is the official vote tallying centre for the by-election here.

He said another reason would be that Hari Raya Aidilfitri is just three weeks away.

“They may not want to balik kampung twice in a short period of time," he said.

He again urged outstation voters to exercise their rights by returning to vote.

He said the official results for both by-elections were expected around 9pm.
